MainOne’s $20 billion partnership with Avanti is set to accelerate Nigeria’s broadband expansion, pushing coverage well beyond the 30% mark.
MainOne, Nigeria’s leading cable data center network provider, has partnered with British satellite operator Avanti Communications Group Plc to accelerate the country’s broadband expansion by over 30%.
According to ITEdgeNews, this collaboration has already led to the commissioning of Avanti’s first Gateway Earth Station (GES) in East Africa, hosted at MDXI’s satellite farm in Lagos. Avanti has invested $20 billion in the gateway to ensure efficient data delivery from its HYLAS-4K satellite, enabling seamless interconnection with other networks.
The satellite will provide High Throughput Satellite (HTS) connectivity, complementing Nigeria’s existing fiber-optic infrastructure. This ensures high-speed internet access nationwide, including in remote and underserved areas, thanks to the Avanti-MDXI partnership.
By extending broadband connectivity to thousands of urban and rural locations, the deal positions Nigeria to exceed its 30% internet penetration target initially set for 2018.
“We are delighted to be partnering with MainOne and MDXI to roll out satellite broadband services across Nigeria and West Africa. Avanti’s products will enhance MainOne’s network and provide reliable connectivity in regions without terrestrial fiber infrastructure. We look forward to expanding our collaboration to serve Nigeria with market-leading broadband solutions,” said Dave Bestwick, Avanti’s Chief Technology Officer.
Beyond connectivity, the initiative will drive economic growth in Nigeria’s ICT sector and create employment opportunities in ICT, engineering, and communications, further strengthening the nation’s digital economy.
